As if depicting a land of fantasy, multicolor flowers splash on top of scenes involving intricately-carved birds or children playing. Given its incredible size, this collector's gourd is truly an extraordinary piece. Look closely, because you never know what you will find in these highly detailed background designs!
The story of how this gourd design originated takes us back in time to the Andes of Peru when an embroidery artist married a master gourd carver. Soon, she began incorporating her passion for vivid color into what had mostly been a monochromatic gourd carving tradition. She perfected what is now known as the "Primavera" technique, which is translated from Spanish as "Spring." This box displays a combination of techniques as the background is naturally colored with the use of fire while flowers are color dyed. This gourd's chiseled lid opens to reveal a finished interior.
