Marcos Boruca Mask Artist

Victor and his brother

“Creating these masks allows me to discover myself--and my culture. I was fortunate to study mask making under Don Ismael, the great teacher. Eventually, in the mid-1990s after seeing how the new colorful masks grew in popularity, I taught myself how to paint.”

Marcos is a master Borucan artist, equipped with a bold imagination, years of carving experience, and exceptional painting skills. He is also an ambassador for Boruca, exhibiting his work throughout Costa Rica and actively promoting his tribe’s cultural heritage. Together with his brothers, he dreams of building an eco-lodge to help generate more tourism for his village.
